There are two kinds of sparklers. One has gunpowder on the tip of a straw. The other kind is made with Japanese paper and the gunpowder is wrapped inside.

You should do fireworks at a large, open place. Bring a candle and water.

Hold the middle of a sparkler and light it. When lighting it, slightly slant the sparkler and move it close to the flame.

When it's lit, straighten it up slowly.

The spark patterns gradually change. Each pattern has a different name: "botan," "matsuba," "yanagi," and "chirigiku." These are names from flowers and leaves, and mean peony, pine needles, willow and falling chrysanthemum petals, respectively.

When the sparkler is finished, make sure to put it a bucket of water.
