- Going to school
High school students are coming to school. Students who come from far away use bicycles, buses and trains. - Different classes
There are many different subjects in high schools. Some subjects are required and others are elective. The length of a class is usually 50 minutes. - Girls' high school
This is a girls' high school, called a joshi-ko. All the students are girls. A school for boys only is a danshi-ko, or a boys' high school. A co-educational school is called a kyo-gaku. - Class greeting
When class starts, students greet the teacher. Students stand up, saying Kiritsu. They bow, saying, Rei. They sometimes say Chakuseki when they sit down. - Modern Japanese class 1
This is a class on modern Japanese. The students study current Japanese and Japanese literature. - Textbooks
This is a modern Japanese textbook. The students underscore or mark the important words and phrases. They write furigana next to difficult-to-read kanji. - Modern Japanese class 2
The teacher is writing the important points on the blackboard. Writing on the blackboard is called bansho. In Japanese class, writing is done vertically. - Modern Japanese class 3
Every student is working hard. They are writing down in their notebooks what the teacher is writing on the blackboard. - Physical education (on the field)
This is a physical education class. The students are on the field. Every student wears the school gym suit. The students are sitting on their bottoms and hugging their knees. This style of sitting is called taiiku-zuwari. - Physical education (Exercise)
The students are warming up, shouting out among themselves. Japan has Radio Exercises, which are known to all Japanese. All students follow the flow of the exercises. - Physical education (in the gym)
The students are playing volleyball in the gym. Physical education class is conducted either on the field or in the gym. - English
This is an English class. English is sometimes divided into separate subjects, such as conversation and reading. - Electronic dictionary 1
Almost all senior high students use electronic dictionaries. - Electronic dictionary 2
An electronic dictionary includes not just an English dictionary but also other references such as a Japanese dictionary and an encyclopedia. It also includes audio data. - Electronic dictionary 3
Phonetic symbols, meanings and example sentences are very easy to look up. - Home economics (cooking)
This is a home economics class. The students study about housework. In cooking class they cook in groups and eat what they made together. - Home economics: making clothes
The students sometimes make clothes in home economics class. They make paper patterns and cut cloth. - Sewing a skirt 1
This student is sewing fabric with a needle and thread. - Sewing a skirt 2
The students are making a skirt. It will be interesting to see how it turns out. - Music class
This is a music class. The students are singing to the piano the teacher is playing. They sometimes play musical instruments. - Art class
This is an art class. The students are painting pictures. - Calligraphy class
This is a calligraphy class. The students are writing characters with brushes. - CALL Classroom 1
English pronunciation is taught in this class. This is the CALL classroom. The students are practicing foreign languages with computers. - CALL Classroom 2
These students wear headsets with microphones and practice foreign-language listening and speaking. - Afterschool 1
Classes are over for today. The final class ends at between 3 and 4 pm. - Afterschool 2
After school some students go home and others take part in club activities.
